Fashion Rules – Made to be Broken

Fashion Rules – Made to be Broken

{In response to a question submitted by a reader: How much does it matter getting your outfit right? What if I make a mistake?}

The Fashion rules, the ones that say never to clash colors or never to mix florals with leather or no ankle boots with midi dresses are all fashion rules created by people like just you and me. These are simply set of statements made in the past just as a result of subjective ideals one believed. But, why do we follow these rules? It is because we are conscious of being pointed out to when we walk down the road and any other social pressure we may encounter or do we actually think these rules are valid and they are simply facts hence there is really a logical reason to follow them?

The one and only theory of beauty I have always believed was that is, in fact, is in the eye of the beholder. It depends on what you were taught to admire when growing up, the country and the city you live, the religion, the culture and the list goes on. Even none of these change in one's lifetime, we all evolve. We grow up and change, we meet people and the ideals we once held dear to our hearts become questionable at some point.

So why not change the rulebook? or throw it away altogether? I have always believed that freedom in one's life is the ultimate luxury and it far outways anything monetary and superficial. It is the freedom to be who you are, to do what you want to do, to say what do think. So wear what you feel good in. If you feel like wearing a dress covered in fruits to a street market, then go for it. If you think you want to put your leather biker jacket on to this mix and carry the straw bag that you picked from your grandmother's attic, then, yes, whyever not?

It has taken me a long while to not care what the random strangers in the street might think of me. Yes, it sounds very silly to even write down. The very words"random strangers" should be enough to seal the deal, but as modestly as possible, know that what you think of yourself is enough. At the end of the day, that is all that matters, for your happiness and well-being, what your own view of the world and yourself is what decides whether we can get a good night's sleep.

So there is really no right and wrong. It is time to make your own statements and to live by your own set of rules!
